Friuli-Venezia Giulia transforms its landscape in just a few kilometres. From alpine peaks on the Slovenian border down to the plains, you cross wide gravel riverbeds and walled historic centres. For a three-day itinerary combining nature with medieval architecture, a car is the most practical choice: driving between the valleys and the plains takes an average of thirty to sixty minutes.

The period between May and early October offers the best travel conditions. Hiking trails in the Tarvisiano area are free of winter snow, and mild temperatures make walking pleasant without the bite of the cold. In autumn, the forests surrounding the mountain lakes turn golden and red, reflecting across the still water.

To make the most of your days, group your stops by geographical proximity. This ensures you spend enough time at each place without passing too many hours behind the wheel. Many historic sites require fairly short visits, but to access certain monuments at weekends, you will need to book ahead.

How to plan your days

Day 1 — Cividale, Palmanova and archaeology

Morning

Start exploring in the east. In Cividale del Friuli, begin at the Ponte del Diavolo, suspended high above the Natisone river; half an hour is plenty to take photos and walk across. A short stroll away is the Tempietto Longobardo (Monastero di Santa Maria in Valle), an early-medieval UNESCO World Heritage site that takes around forty-five minutes to an hour to visit. Book your slot ahead at weekends to skip the queues. The historic centre also conceals the Ipogeo Celtico, a series of rock-carved underground chambers you can explore in about thirty minutes. For lunch, Osteria alla Terrazza serves several varieties of artisan Friulian frico, including a unique frico burger.

Afternoon

Drive south to reach Palmanova. The complex of Piazza Grande e Bastioni a Stella is a nine-pointed star fortress and a prime example of Venetian military architecture, protected by UNESCO. A walk along the earth bastions and across the central square takes between one and two hours, depending on your pace. From here, head down into the southern plains to visit the Basilica Patriarcale di Santa Maria Assunta e Scavi in Aquileia. Allow a couple of hours to fully appreciate its vast early Christian mosaic floor and the Roman archaeological area.

Evening

For dinner, head up to the historic centre of Udine. Trattoria Osteria Al Vecchio Stallo is set within a 17th-century palazzo and serves hearty regional classics. The menu ranges from prosciutto crudo di San Daniele to frico with polenta, rounded off with traditional gubana. The atmosphere is rustic, and tables fill up quickly.

Day 2 — Alpine lakes and historic mummies

Morning

Dedicate the morning to the far north of the region, in the Tarvisiano. It is best to arrive early at the Laghi di Fusine (Lago Superiore e Lago Inferiore), two glacial lakes nestled beneath the Mangart massif. The circular hike between the two takes around two hours. If you fancy a longer route, you can hike up to Rifugio Zacchi, set at an altitude of 1,380 metres in the Fusine basin. Starting from Lago Superiore, the trail takes between an hour and a half and two hours of steady climbing.

Afternoon

After your hike, drive south to Venzone. The town is an inspiring symbol of faithful reconstruction following the 1976 earthquake. The historic centre, enclosed by the Mura Medievali e Duomo di Sant'Andrea, can be explored on foot in about an hour or two. Beside the cathedral stands the Cripta e Cappella di San Michele (Mummie di Venzone), a 13th-century chapel housing historic naturally preserved mummies; twenty to thirty minutes is enough to see them.

Evening

If you stay in Venzone for the evening, stop at Bar Ristorante Caffè Vecchio. Right in the heart of the walled village, it serves traditional cuisine based on local cured meats, classic pasta dishes, and piping-hot frico. Alternatively, if you are heading back to base in Cividale del Friuli, try Al Campanile, a trattoria in via G.B. Candotti known for its vinegar-glazed salame and puffed Montasio frico.

Day 3 — Mosaics, canyons and stone villages

Morning

Your final day focuses on the western area. Spilimbergo is home to the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli, founded in 1922. This renowned mosaic school houses a gallery of classical and modern works, which you can see on a one-hour guided tour. Just a short walk away in the town centre stands the Duomo di Santa Maria Maggiore. It is a Romanesque-Gothic cathedral dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, with interior walls adorned with 14th-century frescoes. Budget around thirty to forty minutes for your visit.

Afternoon

The nearby foothills harbour striking natural landscapes. In Clauzetto, walk the circular trail through the Grotte di Pradis e Orrido del torrente Cosa. The accessible path takes about an hour, winding through a karst canyon framed by rock arches and waterfalls. Driving up towards Val Colvera and Frisanco, you will reach the Borgo rurale di Poffabro. This Carnic Prealps hamlet features beautifully preserved exposed-stone houses and antique wooden balconies; an hour's gentle stroll is ideal to see it all.

Evening

To wrap up your weekend in Friuli, dine at one of the village osterie before heading home. Evening rhythms in these mountain and foothill hamlets are unhurried and kitchens tend to close early, so keep your driving times in mind to avoid arriving after restaurants have shut.

Top planning tips

  • During the peak summer season, vehicle access to Laghi di Fusine incurs a toll. To avoid this and save money, leave your car in the free parking area around 1 km before the lakes and walk up along the 'Sentiero del Lago'.
  • If you plan to visit multiple cultural sites, the 48-hour or 72-hour FVG Card is well worth buying. It includes admission to the Tempietto Longobardo in Cividale and the archaeological area in Aquileia, saving you money on individual tickets.
  • A meal in a traditional osteria typically costs between €25 and €35 per person. Expect an estimated daily budget of around €50-€70 per head, covering meals and admission tickets to the various sights.
