Planning a weekend in Lombardia allows you to combine lakes, historic architecture, and archaeological sites with very little travel time between them. The landscape stretches from the promontories of the Lario to the hills of Bergamo, all the way to the Brescian shores of Lago di Garda.
To make the most of travelling between stops and enjoy the scenery at its best, the ideal time to visit is from April to early June and from September to October. These months let you make the most of the autumn colours or spring blooms, while avoiding the frequent queues and sultry heat typical of midsummer.
How to organise your days
Day 1 — The heart of Lago di Como
Morning
The day begins in Varenna, exploring the Passeggiata degli Innamorati e Centro Storico di Varenna. This cantilevered walkway over the water links the ferry dock to the medieval heart of the village in about an hour. Right after, it is well worth spending an hour or two visiting Villa Monastero, an eclectic residence right on the water's edge surrounded by a botanical garden, usually open from 10:00 to 19:30. A steep, cobbled mule track sets off from Varenna, leading up to Castello di Vezio in about 20-30 minutes on foot. This medieval fortress in Perledo, famous for its ghostly plaster sculptures, offers 360-degree views over Lago di Como and takes at least an hour to visit, with no booking required. If you decide to stay overnight in the area, a great option is Hotel Royal Victoria, by R Collection Hotels, set right in the village.
Afternoon
Crossing over to Bellagio—ideally by public passenger boat or the Navigazione Laghi fast ferry to avoid traffic—you will reach the Giardini di Villa Melzi d'Eril. This English-style park along the lakefront is filled with tree-lined avenues and rare botanical species; the visit takes around one to two hours in the early afternoon. From there, continue to Lenno in the Tremezzina area to explore Villa del Balbianello, the famous FAI property perched on a wooded promontory. Booking in advance is strongly recommended to access the interiors and gardens, and bear in mind that the villa is closed on non-holiday Mondays and Wednesdays.
Evening
Head back towards Bellagio's waterfront for dinner. Ristorante Terrazza Florence sits right above the water, offering a panoramic terrace where you can dine overlooking the lake. If you are looking for scenic accommodation in Bellagio to end the day, Hotel Belvedere is located close by.
Day 2 — The art and history of Bergamo
Morning
Your second day focuses on Bergamo Bassa, starting in the Borgo Santa Caterina neighbourhood. Here you will find the Accademia Carrara, an art gallery boasting masterpieces from the Renaissance through to the 19th century; allow about an hour and a half for the full visit. Staying down in the historic lower town, stop for lunch at Osteria dei Tre Gobbi, a historic trattoria serving traditional Bergamasque recipes with contemporary touches alongside a well-curated wine list.
Afternoon
In the afternoon, make your way up to Bergamo Alta. As car access is restricted by a ZTL, it is best to leave your vehicle in the car parks of Città Bassa or near the station and hop on the historic Funicolare, which completes the journey in just 5 minutes. Once at the top, the highlight is Piazza Vecchia e Cappella Colleoni. Set aside two to three hours here to take in Palazzo della Ragione and the intricate Renaissance architecture of the chapel. If you would like to spend the night near these historic streets, consider Hotel Piazza Vecchia.
Evening
Before dinner, the best time to stroll along the Mura Veneziane di Bergamo Alta is at sunset. These 16th-century fortified walls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, provide sweeping views over the entire plain and Città Bassa below. Enjoy dinner in the heart of Città Alta at Trattoria del Teatro, a historic eatery where you can sample authentic casoncelli alla bergamasca and other local dishes.
Day 3 — Archaeology in Brescia and Lago di Garda
Morning
Morning in Brescia centres on its historic core. Your first stop is the Parco Archeologico di Brescia Romana e Tempio Capitolino, a UNESCO site that includes the Roman theatre and the Capitolium; allow an hour or two for this area, and booking your ticket online in advance is best. A short stroll away is the Museo di Santa Giulia, a vast monastic complex housing the statue of the Vittoria Alata, which requires at least two hours. For lunch, head to Via G. da Salò for Osteria Al Bianchi, a rustic spot dedicated to hearty Brescian flavours such as casoncelli al burro versato and manzo all'olio.
Afternoon
In the afternoon, head towards the shores of Lago di Garda to reach Sirmione. The entrance to the historic centre is dominated by Castello Scaligero di Sirmione, a medieval fortress surrounded by water; allow about an hour to climb up to the ramparts and enjoy the view over the lake. Continuing all the way to the tip of the peninsula brings you to the Grotte di Catullo, where the monumental ruins of an ancient Roman villa stand amid a historic olive grove with direct views of Lago di Garda.
Evening
The evening brings the itinerary to a close, offering the perfect opportunity to pause for a final meal among the narrow lanes of Sirmione before heading home, taking advantage of quieter roads around the lake outside peak hours.
Top tips for planning your trip
- To get between Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio, and Lenno, it is best to leave the car behind due to heavy traffic and scarce parking; buying a central-lake day pass for the passenger boats or fast ferries is far more practical.
- Driving into Bergamo Alta is restricted by a ZTL; the quickest option is to park in the lower town or by the station and ride up in 5 minutes on the Funicolare.
- Entry numbers to Villa del Balbianello are capped; you will need to book well in advance on the FAI website, particularly for weekends between spring and summer.
- The walk up from Varenna to Castello di Vezio takes 20-30 minutes along a steep, cobbled mule track: make sure to wear comfortable shoes with good grip.
