The capital of Basilicata is built vertically: planning your routes is essential if you want to avoid tiring yourself out too early. Potenza is perched at over 800 metres above sea level, an elevation gain that needs to be tackled sensibly to enjoy the historic centre without running out of breath.
For an ideal weekend, aim for late May, which coincides with the patron saint's festival and the Parata dei Turchi. As Italy's highest provincial capital, temperatures drop rapidly in the evening even in late spring: packing a windproof jacket is a must. Distances are not excessive, but the gradient will dictate the pace of your day.
Two days in Potenza: the streamlined itinerary
Day 1 — From the Basento to the ancient heart
Morning
Start down in the valley to understand the city's layout. Over the Basento river, take a look at Ponte Musmeci, an engineering masterpiece of sculpted shell-like reinforced concrete designed in the 1970s. From here, heading towards the centre, make your way to Rione Santa Maria to visit the Chiesa e Convento di Santa Maria del Sepolcro, built in the 12th century along the pilgrim route, which houses the altar of the relic of the Most Precious Blood.
Afternoon
Head up to the centre via the Scale Mobili Santa Lucia (the 600-metre ride from Via Tammone to Portasalza takes 15 minutes). In the afternoon, explore the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Dinu Adamesteanu inside Palazzo Loffredo: allow around 1–2 hours to view the artefacts of ancient Lucania. Then stop by the 13th-century Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi to admire the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian and the 14th-century tomb.
Evening
Spend the evening in the heart of the local stroll, Piazza Mario Pagano, an elegant square framed by Palazzo del Governo and Teatro Francesco Stabile. For dinner, head just off the square into Vico Stabile to Assurd, a venue well known for its traditional sharing platters and updated regional dishes. It is best to book a day in advance, as tables in the centre fill up fast.
Day 2 — Medieval alleys and panoramic views
Morning
In the morning, return to the historic centre. Visit the Cattedrale di San Gerardo, situated at the highest point of Potenza and dedicated to the city's patron saint. A short walk away, seek out the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo: a 12th-century Romanesque building in exposed stone, tucked away in a quiet little square. Stroll along Via Pretoria, the pedestrianised street lined with historic cafes, to grab an espresso and get your bearings.
Afternoon
In the afternoon, head to the eastern end of Via Pretoria to see Torre Guevara, the only surviving remnant of the medieval castle. Standing roughly 20 metres high, climbing its 86 internal steps brings you to a viewpoint looking straight out over the surrounding mountains. To round off the day without rushing, head down towards Via Pierre de Coubertin or Via Orazio Flacco for dinner.
Evening
For dinner, try Trattoria Zi Mingo (in Via Pierre de Coubertin) for a bowl of lagane e ceci or baccalà with peperoni cruschi, or head to Taverna Oraziana (in Via Orazio Flacco) for fresh pasta dishes and local meats. Here too, reserving your table in advance is definitely recommended.
Tips for better planning
- To avoid the ZTL restricted traffic zones and narrow alleys, it is best to park down in the lower town (around Via Tammone or Viale Marconi) and ride the covered escalators up, tackling the steep climb with ease.
- The public escalator systems (Santa Lucia, Armellini, Marconi) are generally open from 07:00 to 21:00. On Fridays and Saturdays hours are extended until 01:00; tickets can be purchased at the entrances or via the Mobility Ticket app.
- For dinner, be sure to try strascinati with toasted breadcrumbs and peperoni cruschi di Senise IGP. Trattorie in the centre have limited tables: you need to book at least 24 hours in advance at weekends.
