The northern promontory of the region offers a landscape split between a maritime setting and dense inland woods. Planning your trip between May and June, or from September to the start of October, ensures clear roads and pleasant hiking temperatures, while steering clear of the typical July and August crowds. Moving between the coastline and the mountain areas requires your own transport, whether a car or a camper van, tackling routes that are often winding yet scenic.
Puglia settentrionale stands out for its excellent touring infrastructure. Numerous camper stops dot the coast and the lakes, even offering designated spots for daytime parking in the forests. If you prefer not to drive in the evening, coastal campsites run direct shuttle services to the pedestrianised historic centres. This logistical flexibility helps balance driving times, which average between 35 and 50 minutes each way between the coast and the inland heights.
How to plan your three-day route
Day 1 — The great coastal lakes and the hinterland
Morning
Start out at the Lago di Lesina e passerella della Laguna, a brackish coastal lake. Exploring the area takes about two hours of easy walking along the wooden boardwalks that skirt the shores. Heading east, you reach Lago di Varano e Foce Varano, Italy's largest coastal lake. The area is surrounded by dense, ancient olive groves and is ideal for slow-paced exploring; wandering around takes another couple of hours, in an isolated setting far from the usual seaside trails.
Afternoon
In the afternoon, the route climbs towards Vico del Gargano, listed among Italy's most beautiful villages. The town sits high in the Gargano hills and takes about two hours to explore on foot, strolling through narrow alleys including the famous Vicolo del Bacio and taking in the compact historic centre. The scenery turns increasingly rustic as you leave the sea behind.
Evening
For dinner, head deeper into the woods within the territory of Vico del Gargano to find Rifugio Sfilzi. The venue serves traditional rustic dishes, local cured meats and artisan liqueurs. The property, which also offers accommodation as Rifugio Sfilzi, must be booked in advance due to its remote location. Evening temperatures here quickly drop, so you will want an extra layer.
Day 2 — Ancient woods and high altitudes
Morning
The second day is entirely devoted to the National Park. The Foresta Umbra e Riserva Naturale Falascone will easily take up half a day. You will walk beneath ancient beech woods recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site, in a mountain-forest haven that offers a sharp break from the coastal heat. Temperatures can easily drop 8 to 10 degrees compared to sea level, making a windbreaker or light jumper essential.
Afternoon
Stop for lunch at Agriturismo Cantoniera d'Umbra, also known as Cantoniera D'Umbra Agriturismo if you decide to stay the night. Set in the cool shade of the dense hillside woods, the restaurant serves home-style cooking and grilled meats; booking is recommended. A short distance away is the Laghetto d'Umbra e Centro Visitatori, a tree-lined lake home to a nature museum and a fallow deer enclosure. Trails for one- to two-hour hikes set off from here.
Evening
In the late afternoon, head up to Monte Sant'Angelo e Santuario di San Michele Arcangelo, at an altitude of over 800 metres. This UNESCO-listed site houses a rock-hewn sanctuary carved directly into the stone. Visiting the Rione Junno and the interior takes between two and three hours, ending your day at the highest and coolest point along the route.
Day 3 — Limestone cliffs and clifftop villages
Morning
Head back to the coast starting at Spiaggia di Vignanotica, between Mattinata and Vieste. It is best to arrive in the morning to catch the bay at its sunniest, with its white pebbles sheltered by sheer vertical cliffs plunging into crystal-clear water. Continuing towards Vieste, you will come across Spiaggia della Scialara and the Monolito del Pizzomunno, a 25-metre-high white limestone sea stack steeped in local folklore, perfect for a seaside stroll.
Afternoon
The Centro Storico di Vieste e Cattedrale dell'Assunta will take up the next two hours. The old town sits on a rocky headland, dominated by the Romanesque cathedral and the imposing Castello Svevo. For lunch, Osteria al Duomo serves local specialities and seafood inside a 15th-century palazzo; get in touch ahead of time to book a table. Next, drive north to the Centro Storico di Peschici, with its whitewashed houses and alleyways perched on a limestone cliff, best explored in the late afternoon.
Evening
Towards sunset, allow 45 minutes to admire the Trabucco di Monte Pucci, an ancient wooden fishing machine jutting out over the rocks. To round off the weekend, Ristorante Al Trabucco da Mimì in Punta San Nicola serves seafood right on one of these historic timber structures above the water. Tables are limited and book up weeks in advance, so plan this dinner before you set off.
Practical logistics tips
- The roads connecting the coast to the interior forest are full of bends: always allow 35 to 50 minutes of driving between coastal towns and mountain areas.
- If you are driving a large vehicle, you will find plenty of campsites along the coast, many running evening shuttle buses to spare you tricky manoeuvres and parking hassles in pedestrianised historic centres.
- Altitude plays a big part: climbing from the beaches to mountain villages at 800 metres brings a sharp temperature drop. An extra layer is essential for afternoon or evening walks in the woods.
- If you plan to dine or have an aperitivo on the ancient wooden fishing platforms turned into restaurants, book several weeks ahead, as tables are very limited.
