Autumn in the Appennino parmense brings thin mists and freezing temperatures, but this is exactly when Val Ceno shows its most authentic side. Towards the end of October, the village of Bardi becomes one of the main hubs in Emilia for those seeking mysterious places and ancient folklore. The main draw is the silhouette of the castle on the rocky spur, which has been studied for decades due to the legend of commander Moroello and Soleste, a tale that attracts teams of researchers and enthusiasts.

Planning a long weekend during this time means pairing the atmosphere of isolated valleys with the Halloween bank holiday, when the fortress opens its doors in the evening for themed tours and reenactments. Your days are split between the cold rooms of the manors and the warmth of the local osterie, where menus are filled with torta di verza and crocetti alla bardigiana topped with stracotto. Choosing a central base, like the Ca' del Grano Albergo Diffuso at the foot of the cliff, allows you to easily manage your car journeys, which are essential for exploring the surrounding hamlets and the remains of nearby towers.

Four days among the valleys of Parma

Day 1 — Arrival in the valley and first explorations

Morning

Reaching Bardi takes about 45-50 minutes of panoramic curves along the SP28 provincial road, exiting the A15 motorway at Fornovo Taro or Borgo Val di Taro. Once you arrive, you should immediately leave your car in Piazza Martiri d'Ungheria or in the Via Predella car park to avoid the ZTL areas and narrow alleys. On foot, begin your exploration from the Borgo medievale e Groppo di San Giovanni, a cluster of quiet streets and panoramic views that sits exactly at the base of the massive red jasper cliff.

Afternoon

The walk continues towards the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, founded in the early sixteenth century by the Servi di Maria, which bears witness to the town's complex religious past. Immediately after, you reach the Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Maria Addolorata. This neo-Byzantine building deserves a slow stop to closely admire the 'Pala di Bardi', the renowned early masterpiece by Parmigianino dated 1521, housed inside.

Evening

For your first dinner, stay in the heart of the village. The Ristorante Bue Rosso, overlooking Piazza Martiri d'Ungheria itself, offers traditional mountain dishes from Parma and is a very convenient option for ending the day just a short distance from the central streets.

Day 2 — The fortress and the night of the witches

Morning

The day is entirely dedicated to the Castello di Bardi (Fortezza Landi). The daytime visit takes about an hour and a quarter. Inside the ancient walls, several historical exhibitions are gathered together: in the lodgings that once housed the courtiers, you will now find the Museo della Civiltà Valligiana, focusing on Apennine trades. Not far away, the Museo della Fauna e del Bracconaggio collects evidence of illegal hunting and the local wild animals.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, attention shifts to the darker areas of the fortress, in line with the weekend's theme. Head down to visit the Prigioni e Sale di Tortura del Castello di Bardi, dark underground spaces that often become the stage for ghost hunters' investigations. Right after, move on to the Museo della Stregoneria, an exhibition dedicated to magical herbs, folklore and practices related to the inquisition.

Evening

From 31 October to 2 November, the fortress hosts the 'Halloween Horror Nights'. These are routes featuring actors and active games, with staggered entries every 30 minutes. Places are limited and it is mandatory to book online in advance. After the cold tour along the walkways, the event ends at the Taverna dei Soldati with hot drinks and traditional sweets.

Day 3 — Walks and mountain country churches

Morning

To view the cliff from another perspective, head down towards the confluence of the Noveglia stream and the Ceno river to walk the Sentiero del Diaspro Rosso. This nature walk skirts the base of the imposing volcanic rock supporting the castle. Heading back towards town, stop at the edge of the village for the Santuario della Beata Vergine Maria delle Grazie, an octagonal medieval structure surrounded by tales of miraculous protection.

Afternoon

You will need your car to move to Località Noveglia. Here, lunch is late and plentiful at the Trattoria Val Noveglia, famous for its torta fritta, cured meats and tagliatelle with mushrooms. With a full stomach, head into the woods towards Frazione Gravago. Your goal is the Pieve di Gravago (Chiesa dei Santi Vito, Modesto e Crescenzia), an isolated building of medieval origins, nestled among the valley gorges in a decidedly striking location.

Evening

Head back to the village to dine at the Antica Osteria Il Pellicano, in Via Pietro Cella. This spot specialises in homely Emilian cooking and offers various options featuring local truffles.

Day 4 — Solar myths and the return along the Ceno

Morning

Leave your accommodation like the B&B Il Pozzo e la Macina and drive towards Varsi. The town houses the Resti del Castello e Borgo di Varsi, where the surviving towers stand alongside the parish church of San Pietro. This entire area is historically linked to the myths and stories that blossomed around the nearby Monte Barigazzo.

Afternoon

Moving to the nearby Frazione Golaso, you can admire the Castello di Golaso from the outside. This fortified house dating back to the XVI-XVII century is shrouded in a specific architectural legend: it is said that its openings were designed to follow the solar calendar, counting 12 staircases, 30 doors and 365 windows.

Evening

Before taking the road back towards the plains, make your last gastronomic stop in Località Ponte Lecca. The Osteria Ponte Lecca, situated right along the stream, offers an authentic valley atmosphere and traditional peasant dishes, perfect for bidding farewell to the hills.

Practical tips for getting around Val Ceno

  • If you are using a sat nav, it is better not to set 'Castello di Bardi' as your final destination so you do not end up in pedestrian streets or excessively narrow alleys. You should search for 'Piazza Martiri d'Ungheria', Via Predella or the former Campo Sportivo area, which also offers space for those travelling in a camper van.
  • Anyone taking part in the evening events in the fortress must turn up with very warm clothing and trainers with good grip to tackle the ancient cobbles. At the end of October, being at an altitude of over 600 metres, temperatures drop drastically as soon as the sun goes down.
  • In terms of costs, a daytime ticket for the castle and museum sections is about 10 €, while special night tours will set you back between 15 and 25 €. In the valley's trattorie, a full meal including drinks averages around 25-35 € per person.
  • The Ognissanti weekend is the ideal time to try the mountain's autumnal produce: look on the menus for fresh porcini mushrooms, 'torta di verza' and the classic 'crocetti alla bardigiana' accompanied by slow-cooked stracotto.
